Secondary School
Years 7-10
Our Years 7–10 program supports students through early and middle adolescence, a time of rapid physical, cognitive, social and emotional growth. We design learning that is engaging, challenging and responsive to the needs of young people aged 11–16.
Our contemporary teaching practices encourage students to:
- engage with global issues and diverse perspectives
- communicate with confidence across new media and multimodal forms
- think critically, creatively and abstractly
- participate in meaningful, authentic learning
- seek relevance and purpose in their studies
- reflect on identity, beliefs and their place in the world
Everything we do is guided by our Free to Flourish values:
Adventurous – curious, creative and willing to explore new ideas
Compassionate – empathetic, caring and understanding
Purposeful – intentional, driven and striving for growth
Relational – respectful, connected and community-minded
With smaller class sizes, flexible grouping and a strong focus on essential 21st-century skills, students develop independence, curiosity and confidence as learners.
At ELC, learning is most powerful when ideas connect. We take an integrated approach that links concepts across the curriculum, helping students see how different disciplines work together to make sense of real-world issues. This big-picture understanding strengthens critical thinking, creativity and a lifelong love of learning.
Core Curriculum &
Elective Program
Our Secondary Curriculum enables students to tailor their learning each semester. Alongside the Core Curriculum, students can explore their interests through the College elective program, selecting units from a range of disciplines.
All learning is designed and delivered in alignment with the Australian Curriculum and the College’s values framework.
Years 7 & 8
Information on Electives
Three Elective lines are offered in both Years 9 and 10, with the option of semester, year-long or two-year courses. ELC can also offer students on a vocational pathway the ability to engage in Certificate 2 & 3 VET courses from Year 10.
All Electives offered can lead to a variety of accredited Tasmanian Certificate of Education and VET (Vocational Education and Training) subjects.
Years 9 & 10
Elective Program
The College Electives draw their content from different learning areas across the Australian Curriculum and often draw from more than one area, allowing for integrated units.
Year 7 and 8 students engage in a range of Languages, Arts, and Technology Rotations.
Students in Year 9 and 10 have the opportunity to undertake either semester or year-long electives and are encouraged to experience a range of learning experiences to allow for the identification of interest areas to support pathway planning and subject choice in Years 11 and 12.
Available electives change each year depending on student interest and preferences.
